New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani announced July 27, 2026, a price reduction of 30 percent on key grocery items sold at the new Municipal Grocery Stores.

He was joined Deputy Mayorย for Economic Justice Julieย Suย and New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to announce the new measure.
A core basket of everyday groceries will be 30 percent cheaper at the five newย municipalย grocery stores. The basket will include all fresh produce,ย meatย and seafood, along withย roughly 20ย additionalย categories of pantry staples,ย dairyย and refrigerated goods.
The discount will apply to allย regardless of income, with prices locked in and predictable rather than fluctuating week to week as is the case at private grocers, the press release said.
โCombined, the savings are projected to cut New Yorkersโย average grocery bill by 15 percent, about $90 a month, orย roughly $1,000ย a year,โ according to the announcement.
โIn the wealthiest city in the richest country in the world, no one should have to wonder how theyโll afford the food they need to feed themselves or their families,โ Mamdani said and posted on X.com.
Theย Mayorย also issued a request for proposals (RFP) from qualified grocers or firms to serve as operators of one or more N.Y.C. Groceries stores.
The first grocery store is expected to open by the end of 2027 at Hunts Point in the Bronx, and all five stores โ one per borough โ will be open by the end of the Mayorโs first term, according to the plan. This goal was on Mamdaniโs campaign agenda.
