
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 21 (ANI): Jadavpur Police Station on Friday registered a case following a complaint by the Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, alleging that a group of unknown persons and outsiders forcibly entered the campus, indulged in arson and vandalism, and intimidated students and security personnel.
According to a police statement, “A specific case has been started on the complaint of the VC of Jadavpur University.”
The police said the Jadavpur Police Station received a written complaint from the Vice-Chancellor on Thursday, alleging that a group of unknown persons and outsiders forcibly entered the university campus after 12.37 am on August 20.
According to the complaint, the group allegedly indulged in arson, vandalism and intimidation. Burning materials were allegedly thrown into Aurobindo Bhavan, where students and security personnel had taken shelter, putting their lives at risk.
University property, including CCTV cameras, gates and other installations, was also allegedly damaged. The complaint further alleged that an attempt was made to forcibly open the Main Hostel gate.
Further vandalism was reported at around 2 pm on August 20, including damage to the university emblem and adjoining installations, the police said.
“Accordingly, a case has been registered vide Jadavpur Case No. 162, dated 21.08.2026, under sections 189/190/191/324(4)/326(f)/351(2)/329(3) and 3/4 of the PDPP Act,” the police statement said.
The police said the investigation is in progress.
Earlier, a physical altercation reportedly broke out between two groups of students at Jadavpur University during a General Body Meeting on Wednesday night, leaving two ABVP members injured.
The General Body Meeting was organised by students affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU) at around 9 pm at Arbindo Bhawan inside the university campus.
The incident occurred during a meeting related to the constitution of the FETSU Union, with students from different political affiliations reportedly opposing each other’s positions.
According to the report, Left-wing supporters allegedly attempted to constitute the union unilaterally during the meeting. The move was opposed by ABVP supporters Diptiman Kar and Nikhil Das, the ABVP president.
Following the opposition, a physical altercation reportedly took place between the two groups on the university campus.
The injured ABVP members, Nikhil Das and Diptiman Kar, were subsequently taken to KPC Hospital in Jadavpur for treatment.
Around midnight, MLA Sarbari Mukherjee, accompanied by supporters, arrived at Jadavpur Police Station to lodge a complaint. (ANI)
