Clifton, NJ, August 17, 2025 — The Indian American Seniors Association (IASA) of Clifton patriotically organized a flag raising ceremony at Clifton City Hall to commemorate the 79th Independence Day of India. The event paid tribute to India’s freedom fighters, remembering Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation who pioneered non-violent resistance; Subhas Chandra Bose, the charismatic leader of the Indian National Army; Bhagat Singh, the young revolutionary who sacrificed his life for freedom; Rani Lakshmi Bai, the fearless Queen of Jhansi; and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the prominent nationalist who inspired masses with his slogan, “Swaraj is my birthright.”

The program began with Ganesh Stuti, followed by Shantipath, after which Ms. Mahi Patel spoke on the significance of India’s Independence Day. IASA President Bharat Rana addressed the gathering with a heartfelt speech, recalling the long journey from India’s struggle for independence to its emergence as the world’s largest democracy. “For us, as seniors, this moment holds deep meaning. Many of us have seen India’s journey — from its struggles for freedom to its rise as a global leader. We have carried those values here to the United States, where the Indian community has made remarkable contributions in science, technology, medicine, business, public service, and education. By raising our flag here today, side by side with the American flag, we celebrate not only our heritage but also the unity of cultures, the friendship between our two great nations, and the shared values of democracy, diversity, and opportunity,” he said. Expressing gratitude to the City of Clifton, the Mayor, community officials, volunteers, sponsors, and donors, Mr. Rana encouraged younger generations to uphold traditions and values, concluding with a resounding “Jai Hind! God Bless America!”

The celebration drew an impressive turnout, with over 200 members of the IASA family gathering to demonstrate solidarity and pride. Distinguished guests included Mahesh Yadav, Consul of Community Affairs from the Consulate General’s Office, New York; Congresswoman Nellie Pou; Clifton Mayor Ray Grabowski; former Mayor James Anzaldi; Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh; and Board of Education President and Commissioners Allan Paris, Joe Siano, Richard Majia, Judy Bassford, and Christina Schartz. Assemblywoman Alixon Gill and representatives from Senator John McKean, Assemblywoman Rosy Bagoli, and Assemblywoman Swanda Sumter also attended, presenting citations to the Indo-American Seniors Association of Clifton.
During the ceremony, IASA President Bharat Rana was honored with awards from Senator Nellie Pou, Assemblywoman Rosy Bagolie, and Senator Benjie, recognizing his outstanding service to the community. The program concluded with warm hospitality as guests enjoyed Pav Bhaji, coffee, cookies, and brownies, ending the day on a note of togetherness and celebration.
