Chicago, August 15, 2025 — The Tiranga soared high above Daley Plaza as the Indian American community gathered to mark Bharat’s 79th Independence Day and commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a timeless symbol of unity, resilience, and patriotism. The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA, est. 1980) Chicago, in partnership with the National India Hub, hosted the grand celebration at City Hall’s Daley Plaza. The event drew more than 120 attendees, including dignitaries, elected officials, community leaders, and families who came together to honor India’s freedom and cultural heritage.
In his keynote address, FIA President Hemant Patel paid tribute to the countless freedom fighters who sacrificed for India’s independence. Reflecting on the resilience of Bharat’s ancient civilization, he urged the community to celebrate the milestone with “joy, gratitude, and renewed responsibility.” He also expressed heartfelt appreciation to FIA’s sponsors, media partners, community organizations, over 60 member associations, youth participants, performers, and volunteers. Special acknowledgments were given to Consul General Somnath Ghosh and FIA Trustee-Director Dr. Bharat Barai for their steadfast encouragement and support. This year’s theme, the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, highlighted Patel’s unmatched role in unifying India and shaping its modern identity.
The celebration was graced by several dignitaries, including Consul General Somnath Ghosh, Alderwoman Debra Silverstein, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, former MLA Sahab Singh, and distinguished community leaders such as Dr. Bharat Barai, Ajeet Singh, Nirav Patel, Ramesh Choksi, Raja Babu, Nitin Surti, Devesh Pandit, and Maharashtra Mandal Chicago President Nameeta Vedak. In their remarks, Consul General Ghosh, Alderwoman Silverstein, and Treasurer Pappas emphasized shared democratic values and the unifying spirit of Independence Day. FIA Trustee Rakesh Malhotra and former MLA Sahab Singh called for continued remembrance of India’s freedom fighters, underscoring their sacrifices for future generations.
The program began with renditions of the U.S. and Indian national anthems, followed by the proud hoisting of the Tiranga at the heart of Chicago’s downtown, a moment that filled the plaza with patriotic fervor. Bharatanatyam teacher Rasika Bandekar led her students in a captivating classical dance performance, while youth performers highlighted Bharat’s rich cultural traditions, symbolizing the blend of heritage and modernity within the diaspora.

FIA executives, including Amar Upadhyay, Shailesh Rajput, Rohit Joshi, Anil Singh, Arvind Ankleshwaria, and trustees Bhailalbhai Patel and Rakesh Malhotra, presented certificates of appreciation to volunteers, performers, and cultural contributors. Special gratitude was extended to Yash Desai for his dedicated efforts in curating the cultural lineup.
