SKOKIE, IL — Local leaders are backing Bushra Amiwala for Congress in Illinois’ 9th district. Trustees Lissa Levy (district 3), Jim Iverson (district 4) and Gail Schechter (at-large) have all endorsed Amiwala in the campaign for the March 2026 primary, a December 16, 2025, press release said.
“I am thrilled to have the support of Trustees Levy, Iverson and Schechter,” said Amiwala, an elected Skokie District 73.5 Board member. “I have spent a lifetime working alongside them right here in my hometown. These are three local leaders who are truly motivated to improve the quality of life in Skokie.”
With a population of almost 70,000 residents, Skokie is among the largest and most important municipalities in the district. No candidate in IL-09 has earned as many endorsements from officials in Skokie as Amiwala has, the campaign said.
The three trustees released statements on why they believe Amiwala will be the best choice for voters in IL-09.
“Bushra represents the very best of Skokie and the very best about what makes the American idea so great: champion of education, civil rights, economic fairness, diversity, cooperation, and sheer grit,” said Skokie Trustee Lissa Levy. “Bushra doesn’t just say she stands for these ideals; she lives them in daily practice.”
“We are so happy to support Bushra for the same reasons we love Skokie; she believes in a community that includes all of our neighbors, education that produces broad minds, justice for every person, and power in the hands of regular people.”
Skokie Trustee Gail Schechter concluded that “Bushra is the finest Skokie and IL-09 has to offer.”
Bushra has received several other endorsements since she announced her campaign, her website bushraforcongress.com shows.
