Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance on Sunday announced the birth of their fourth child, Alec Neel.
The baby boy was born on Sunday morning, the couple announced on social media. His birth marks the first time in more than 150 years that a sitting vice president has had a baby while in office, after Schuyler Colfax in 1870.
“Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” the Vances said in the announcement.
JD Vance, now 41, was the third-youngest person to be sworn in as vice president. He and Usha Vance, 40, had two sons and a daughter before entering office: Ewan Blaine (9), Vivek (6) and Mirabel Rose (4).

The couple thanked their doctors and staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit.
The Vance family’s plans to make a second home in Middleburg, Virginia, has caused a stir in the old-money town outside of Washington. Residents are concerned about the helicopters, Secret Service and motorcades that the couple will bring to the area known for horses and antiques.
JD Vance said that the killing of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk convinced him and Usha to try for another child. They made the decision after Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, told them she regretted only having two children with her late husband while they were helping her escort her husband’s body back to Arizona.
Vance recalled the conversation in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal adapted from his new book.
Vance is widely expected to run for president in 2028, but he has told reporters that he will not make a decision until after the 2026 midterm elections. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s prominence within the the Trump administration has prompted some Republicans to discuss the possibility that Rubio may also seek the party’s nomination.
