Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, Aruna Miller, presented a Governor’s Citation to South Asian Herald Founder and Editor-in-Chief, T. Vishnudatta Jayaraman, Ph.D., on June 25 at the State Capitol in Annapolis, recognizing his contributions to journalism, and his efforts to elevate the South Asian diaspora.

Congratulating Jayaraman, the Citation states, “At every step, you have protected and defended journalism, the bedrock of democracy, by serving as a trusted messenger, asking hard questions, seeking answers, and reminding us that truth-telling should never be silenced. With honor, we are pleased to confer upon you this Governor’s Citation.”
It further noted he has “uplifted immigrants and members of the South Asian diaspora who have helped strengthen communities and shape the fabric of our nation.”
Commenting on the recognition, Miller said, “Journalism is essential to a strong democracy, and Vishnu has dedicated his career to telling stories that inform, connect, and uplift communities.”
Miller noted, “As a fellow immigrant, I know how important it is for the South Asian community to see its stories told with accuracy and care,” adding, “I congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition and thank him for his continued commitment to the communities he serves.”
Maryland Secretary of State, Susan Lee also lauded Jayaraman on receiving the Governor’s Citation.
“Over the years, Vishnu’s excellent reporting and work have been integral in highlighting the contributions and achievements of Indian Americans and the broader South Asian community in Maryland,” Secretary Lee said. “This recognition is well deserved and reflects the meaningful impact of his journalism and community-focused work.”
Maryland Secretary of Health, Dr. Meena Seshamani, congratulated Jayaraman at the State Capitol after the citation presentation.
In separate statements, Maryland Secretary of General Services, Atif Chaudhry, former Maryland Secretary of Higher Education, Sanjay Rai, and Chair of the Maryland Governor’s Commission on South Asian American Affairs Gurpreet Takhar also acknowledged Jayaraman’s contributions following the presentation of the citation.
