The New York City Police Department posted a photo announcing the death of one of its own officers killed by a man on a shooting rampage Monday, July 28, 2025.
Didarul Islam, 36, was the first to be killed by the shooter who drove in from Nevada, leaving his wife and two children fatherless in the Bronx, where the Bangladeshi community began gathering soon after to mourn with the family.
“Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department. He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today. We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honor his legacy,” the NYPD posted on X, with a photo of the officer who had served barely 3 years in the force.
New York Times reported June 29, that leaders of the Bangladeshi community, as well as family and friends gathered early to pay their respects to the slain officer. It also said Islam’s wife is pregnant with their 3rd child.
Mayor Eric Adams praised Islam for heroism and also met his family. “He’s an immigrant from Bangladesh and he loved this city and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person. He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore, but in his spirit and energy of loving this city,” Adams said at a press conference.
“Early tonight I met with the officer’s family, I told them that he was a hero and we admire him for putting his life on the line. This was his dad only son. I think about Jordan, my child, and it’s unimaginable to experience a loss of this magnitude. And three of the innocent civilians are also dead. Two males and one female and another male is seriously injured fighting for his life in critical condition because of the violent, despicable attack,” the Mayor added.

On his Facebook account, Mayor Adams showed flags at half-mast, noting, “As a mark of respect for the memory of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam who died in the line of duty and the multiple victims of the mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan at 345 Park Avenue yesterday, I’ve ordered all flags on all city buildings and stationary flagstaffs throughout the five boroughs to be lowered to half-staff until further notice.”
Update
One of the sites raising money for Islam’s family, “Fund The First” described itself as the “the ONLY APPROVED FUNDRAISER by the family of Didarul Islam, in conjunction with Law Enforcement Officers Weekend Inc. and the NYPD’s DESI Society, Bangladeshi American Police Association and Muslim’s Officer Society.”
Its goal is to raise $500,000 and it had raised $37097 by noon on July 29, from 500 donations.
“Didarul Islam was more than a Police Officer—he was a devoted father to two young boys, a beloved son, a caring husband, and a big brother not only to his sisters but to countless cousins, both here and in Bangladesh,” Fund The First said.
He arrived in the United States from Bangladesh in 2009, and joined the NYPD in 2021.
